Environment Manager – Carbon Reduction

About the job:

The role of the Energy and Carbon Manager will be to champion the environmental sustainability agenda with a focus on energy efficiency, carbon reporting and decarbonisation.

The Energy and Carbon Manager will work in partnership with other areas of the business to ensure energy efficient business practices are embedded throughout GWR to help achieve the energy reduction targets outlined in the upcoming National Rail Contract.

Key to this role will be the development of action plans to deliver against our Net Zero commitment. You will be responsible for the continual improvement of data capture and reporting to ensure the business understands the environmental and carbon impact from energy consumption.

The Energy and Carbon Manager will be responsible for compliance with all energy and carbon related legislation and industry standards.

A large part of this role will involve stakeholder engagement both with wider FirstGroup colleagues, suppliers and various industry groups. Collaboration will be needed to mitigate risks and identify opportunities for synergies, efficiencies and innovation.

Your main responsibilities will be:

  • Maintain and improve the GWR E2MS Management System across the organisation to maintain ISO 50001
  • Capture Scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon emissions and prepare periodic reports as required by internal and external stakeholders.
  • Submit annual carbon reporting figures to FirstGroup
  • Play an active part in supporting other business functions to implement energy management initiatives, monitoring the potential impact (positive and negative) on energy performance
  • Develop compliant energy and environmental policies
  • Schedule and accompany auditors on ISO50001 certification audits
  • Provide content for internal communications sharing GWR's progress/achievements towards Net Zero
  • Work to align the approach with best practice from FirstGroup and its Train Operating Companies
  • Establish a metering / sub-metering / tenant energy and water metering plan as basis for accurate reporting of energy use to multiple stakeholders, to support legislative responsibilities (e.g. CRC / Heat Networks Regulations)
  • Lead continual improvement of process and procedures in relation to energy efficiency in support of TOC energy reduction targets and wider objectives of FirstGroup carbon strategy
  • Work closely with GWR Procurement team to advise on opportunity in relation to demand management priorities / opportunity presented by new tariffs and market instruments and products: seek new opportunities to improve energy efficiency within our supply chain, ensuring energy efficiency requirements and targets are clearly referenced in contract documents.
  • Work with procurement at TOC and Group level to ensure energy management is considered in all procurement activity
  • Support GWR Property and Engineering Infrastructure team with the delivery of energy efficiency related Business Plan Commitments.
  • Lead a programme of behavioural change across the organisation to reduce energy consumption
  • Identify opportunities for improving energy efficiency across GWR assets, within maintenance and facilities management contracts and through engagement approaches: prepare compelling business cases and implement the schemes identified.
  • Responsible for supporting energy and water bill validation, validating billed consumption against actual meter readings.
  • Manage and approve utility related invoicing
  • Manage relationship with utilities companies including fault resolution.
  • Maintain relationship with GWR Property and GWR Engineering Infrastructure team on all utility issues
  • Update on implemented schemes and potential schemes when setting annual energy reduction targets
  • Ensure reporting of energy performance in line with GWR National Rail Contract obligations
  • Provide energy data to FirstGroup in line with corporate reporting requirements, including calculation and reporting of Scope 3 carbon emissions (including those related to wastes, water use)
  • Provide support to all GWR teams in understanding their own energy consumption and developing plans for improvement
  • Support the Environment Lead in delivering wider environmental and sustainability initiatives as required

Who are we looking for?

You will enjoy working across multiple different business functions and will be skilled at building relationships and seeking out improvement opportunities.

Education

  • Member of IEMA or other related professional body
  • HND or degree in a science or engineering subject or other environmental discipline
  • Internal audit qualification preferable but not essential

Job Specific Knowledge & Skills

  • Relevant energy management experience preferably within a multi-site environment
  • Experience in implementing ISO 50001 Energy Management Systems
  • Experience in carbon reporting and compiling and submitting data for external verification
  • Knowledge of Science Based Targets Initiative and development of Net Zero strategy development and target setting
  • Experience in identifying and implementing energy reduction measures across a multi-site portfolio
  • Experience in writing compelling business cases to secure funding
  • Knowledge of energy and climate change legislation
  • Understanding of the current and likely future development of the UK energy and water market
  • Use of monitoring and Targeting (M&T) approaches for energy reduction
  • Excellent communicator and team player
  • Ability to manage own time and work independently
  • Proactive in seeking out improvement opportunities
  • Excellent report writing skills (essential for preparing business cases)
  • Advanced Excel and data reporting/analysis skills
  • Ability to maintain effective relationships with stakeholders

Location:

Milford House, Swindon but travel across the GWR network to be expected. Flexible working options are available

Working hours:

37 hours per week
