As you might expect, we’re big on journeys here; your time with FirstGroup is as much about how you can get there as it is about where we can take you. And better still, learning and development here comes in the form of varied and exciting opportunities and activities. It’s known as a 70-20-10 learning model: mostly hands-on with plenty of feedback and some formal training. We think it’s the best way to give you a rounded experience of what life is like as part of our team.

Learning on-the-job (70%)

The best way to learn about FirstGroup and our businesses is by being part of them. From the word go, you’ll develop your skills by working directly with your colleagues across our business, operations and engineering functions. We want to find the right balance between meeting your needs and our business priorities. No matter where you decide to go after your time on our graduate programme, this experience will have you heading in the right direction.

Network and community (20%)

We completely understand the value of building a positive rapport between yourself and your colleagues. That’s why we place such an emphasis on feedback and mentoring. We’ll encourage you to seek feedback from all stakeholders who are engaged in your development. The network you build will help you develop your strengths and support you on your career journey.

Formal training (10%)

As your development progresses and your needs alter, we’ll make sure you get all the right training. This will enable you to know what to do in key situations across different roles (and how to do it). You’ll attend courses within the business and also complete external training, centred around developing your leadership and management capabilities.

Personal Development Plans (PDP)

Your tailored PDP will be at the forefront of your development. It’s a plan that travels with you throughout your programme and beyond. You’ll work together with your manager to continually review and update it so that we can decide collaboratively where to take your learning next.

Beyond the programme

And once you’ve completed the programme? What’s next?

Anywhere tomorrow really means anywhere – your options are abundant. We’ll help you find your first substantive role within one of the FirstGroup businesses. As you move into this role, we’ll encourage you to make the most of your mentor and draw on the partnerships and networks that you’ve built.

Whichever role you move into, your development won’t end with your programme. Everyone within a FirstGroup business has access to a wide range of training opportunities and workplace learning. This gives you the chance to make the biggest possible impact on the business’s success. And at the same time, it enhances your skills so you can keep moving in your career. We give all our graduates highly competitive salaries. You will also receive a welcome bonus of £1,500 before you join to support your relocation to where you will be working for your first placement.

We’ll fund all of your on and off-the-job training including (but not limited to), finance for non-finance managers, introduction to project management, introduction to coaching and commercial awareness and people management skills, as well as your programme of continuous development throughout the two years. We will also pay any professional membership fees where applicable.

Annual Leave

You’ll enjoy 25 days’ annual leave plus bank holidays.
